THE SHORT ANSWER
Does OSHA require fire extinguisher training?
If you provide fire extinguishers for employees to use, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(g) requires you to train them on the basics of using an extinguisher and the hazards of fighting small fires when they're hired and at least once a year after that. Employees designated to fight fires need training on the equipment itself. Hands-on practice is the best way to make it stick.
Rules vary by city and building, and your local fire marshal has the final say. We'll tell you what your inspector will look for.
THE PROBLEM
Why people freeze in a real fire
A fire in a kitchen or warehouse leaves seconds to act. People who have never held an extinguisher hesitate, or do the wrong thing.
- 01
They've never pulled the pin
The first time someone handles an extinguisher shouldn't be during a fire.
- 02
The wrong extinguisher
Water or the wrong class on burning grease spreads the fire. Kitchen staff need to know Class K.
- 03
Aiming at the flames
Untrained people spray the flames instead of the base of the fire, and waste the extinguisher in seconds.
- 04
Not knowing when to leave
Fighting a fire that's too big is how people get hurt. Training covers when to get out.

Training questions we hear
Does OSHA require fire extinguisher training for employees?
Yes, if you provide extinguishers for employees to use. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(g) requires training when they're hired and at least once a year. If your written policy is that everyone evacuates instead, extinguisher training isn't required, but evacuation training is.
Is the training hands-on?
Yes. Everyone practices the PASS method with a real extinguisher, on a controlled fire in a steel training pan outdoors when the site allows it.
Can you train my staff in Spanish?
Yes. Sessions are available in Spanish or English, and we can split a group if your team needs both.
How long is a fire extinguisher training session?
Usually about an hour, depending on the group size and whether kitchen system practice is included.
Do you provide proof of training?
Yes. You get a sign-in roster with the date, trainer and attendees for your OSHA or insurance file.
