THE SHORT ANSWER

How often do fire extinguishers need to be inspected in Florida?

Every fire extinguisher needs a quick monthly check by your staff and a full annual inspection, called annual maintenance, by a company licensed by the Florida State Fire Marshal. The annual inspection ends with a new service tag on the unit. Most dry chemical units also need six-year maintenance, and every extinguisher needs a hydrostatic test every 5 or 12 years depending on its type.

Rules vary by city and building, and your local fire marshal has the final say. We'll tell you what your inspector will look for.

THE PROBLEM

Why fire extinguishers fail inspection

An inspector looks at every extinguisher the same way. These are the problems we find most on walkthroughs.

  • 01

    An expired tag

The punched month and year is more than 12 months old. It's the most common write-up there is.

  • 02

    Gauge out of the green

Low pressure means the unit may not work, usually from a slow leak or a partial discharge nobody reported.

  • 03

    Missing pin or broken seal

A missing pin or tamper seal means someone may have used or tampered with it, so it has to be checked and recharged.

  • 04

    Blocked or badly mounted

Behind boxes, on the floor, or mounted too high. Units have to be visible, reachable and at the right height.

    Every unit, every location

We walk your site, find every extinguisher and log its location, type, size and serial number.

  2. 02

    Full annual maintenance

Pressure and weight, pin and seal, hose and nozzle, cylinder condition, label and mounting, checked to NFPA 10.

  3. 03

    A new Florida tag

Each unit gets a tag with the technician's name and State Fire Marshal permit number, punched for month and year.

  4. 04

    Problems fixed the same visit

Recharges and replacements handled on the spot when possible, and six-year and hydro dates flagged before they're due.

QUESTIONS

Inspection questions we hear

What happens during a fire extinguisher inspection?

The technician checks pressure and weight, the pin and tamper seal, the hose and nozzle, the cylinder's condition and label, and how the unit is mounted, then attaches a new service tag and records it. Units that fail are recharged or replaced.

Is fire extinguisher certification the same as an inspection?

Yes, mostly. When people say their extinguishers are certified, they mean the annual inspection was done by a licensed company and each unit has a current tag. In Florida the tag shows the technician's name and permit number.

What's the difference between the monthly and annual inspection?

The monthly check is a quick look your own staff can do: the unit is in place, the gauge is in the green and the seal is intact. The annual inspection is a full maintenance check by a licensed technician, finished with a new tag.

How long does an extinguisher inspection take?

A few minutes per extinguisher. Most small businesses are done in one short visit, and we can come before you open or after you close.

Do fire extinguishers expire?

Rechargeable extinguishers don't have a fixed expiration; they stay in service as long as they pass annual maintenance, six-year maintenance and hydrostatic tests. Disposable (non-rechargeable) dry chemical units have to be taken out of service 12 years after they were made.

Do you inspect fire extinguishers near me?
