THE SHORT ANSWER
How often does a backflow preventer need to be tested in Miami-Dade?
Miami-Dade Water and Sewer requires every backflow prevention assembly to be tested by a certified backflow tester when it's installed and every year after, under Florida's cross-connection control rule. Fire sprinkler lines have a second yearly requirement: NFPA 25 calls for a forward flow test of the backflow preventer at the system's design flow.
Rules vary by city and building, and your local fire marshal has the final say. We'll tell you what your inspector will look for.
THE PROBLEM
Why backflow tests get missed
A backflow preventer sits outside behind the bushes or in a mechanical room and nobody thinks about it, until the utility's overdue notice shows up.
- 01
Nobody owns the due date
The assembly was tested when the building opened and then forgotten. The utility tracks the date even when you don't.
- 02
Two tests on fire lines
Sprinkler-line backflow preventers need the utility's yearly assembly test and NFPA 25's yearly forward flow test. Doing one doesn't cover the other.
- 03
Valves stuck from sitting
Check valves that never move can stick, open or closed. A yearly test exercises them and catches it before it matters.
- 04
No report on file
If the test isn't reported to the utility, it didn't happen as far as they're concerned. You need the paper trail.

THE SOLUTION
One visit, tested and on record
- 01
We find every assembly
Fire line, domestic and irrigation backflow preventers, each logged with its location, size and serial number.
- 02
Certified test
A certified tester checks each check valve and relief valve with a calibrated test kit. Water is off only for a few minutes.
- 03
Report for the utility
You get the test report for your water utility and a copy in your digital record.
- 04
Failures explained, then retested
If an assembly fails, we tell you what failed and what the repair involves, and retest it once it's fixed.

QUESTIONS
Backflow questions we hear
What is a backflow preventer?
A valve assembly on your water line that stops water from flowing backward out of your building, sprinkler system or irrigation into the public water supply. Common types are double check assemblies, reduced pressure zone (RP) assemblies and double detector checks on fire lines.
How often does a backflow preventer need to be tested in Miami-Dade?
When it's installed and every year after, by a certified backflow tester. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer runs the cross-connection control program that tracks these tests.
Do fire sprinkler backflow preventers need a different test?
They need both. The water utility's yearly assembly test checks the valves, and NFPA 25 adds a yearly forward flow test at the sprinkler system's design flow, to prove the backflow preventer won't choke the water supply in a fire.
What happens if my backflow preventer fails the test?
The assembly needs repair, usually new check valve parts or seals, and a retest before the passing report goes to the utility. We'll tell you exactly what failed and what the repair involves.
How long does a backflow test take?
Usually under half an hour per assembly. The water on that line is off only for a few minutes while the valves are tested.
Do you test backflow outside Miami-Dade?
Yes. We work across South Florida and the Florida Keys. Each water utility runs its own program, and we'll make sure the report goes where yours needs it.
