THE SHORT ANSWER
When does a fire extinguisher need to be recharged?
NFPA 10 requires a fire extinguisher to be recharged after any use, even a partial one, and whenever an inspection finds it low on pressure or weight. A missing pin or broken tamper seal also means it should be checked and recharged. In Florida, recharging has to be done by a company licensed by the State Fire Marshal, and the unit gets a new service tag.
Rules vary by city and building, and your local fire marshal has the final say. We'll tell you what your inspector will look for.
THE PROBLEM
Why a used extinguisher is a hidden risk
After a small fire or a test squeeze, most people put the extinguisher back on the wall. That's the one that won't work next time.
- 01
It loses pressure
Once the valve opens, the seal is broken and pressure leaks out over days or weeks, even if the gauge looks fine at first.
- 02
The gauge is in the red
Low pressure means a weak or short spray, or none at all, when you need it.
- 03
Powder in the valve
Dry chemical left in the valve can keep it from sealing or cake inside the cylinder.
- 04
Nobody reported it
Staff use it and hang it back up. An inspector who finds a missing seal writes it up.

Recharge questions we hear
Can I recharge a fire extinguisher myself?
No. In Florida, extinguishers have to be serviced by a company licensed by the State Fire Marshal, and the technician signs a new service tag. A home refill wouldn't be legal or tagged.
Do I need to recharge an extinguisher if I only used a little?
Yes. Once the valve opens, the seal is broken and the remaining pressure leaks out. NFPA 10 requires a recharge after any use.
Can disposable fire extinguishers be recharged?
No. Disposable extinguishers, usually with plastic valve heads, are used once and replaced. Rechargeable units have metal valves and can be serviced for years.
Is it cheaper to recharge or replace a fire extinguisher?
It depends on the size, type and age. Larger rechargeable units are usually worth recharging; small or older ones are sometimes better replaced. We'll tell you which makes sense.
What if I need coverage while my extinguisher is being recharged?
Ask when you book. Many units are recharged on the same visit, and we can install a new extinguisher if you can't be without one.
Do you offer emergency recharge?
Yes, 24/7. If an extinguisher or a kitchen suppression system goes off, call and we'll get you back in service.
